Circle The WagonsBy Jack MasonJanuary 31, 2007 Man the bulwarks, circle the wagons, sprint for the storm cellars; the arrogant autocracy, the self-assumed philosopher-kings, are in our state and national capitol buildings again for their seasonal assault on citizen sovereignty. And so it's time once again for us peasants and common folk to remind our legislators that in America we the people are the only legitimate source of their authority to legislate. And since we the people have no authority to enslave a neighbor nor to steal from one neighbor to give to another (more deserving), neither do they. Unfortunately too many of our fine legislators act as though they believe that the value of a legislative session is measured by how many new laws they can pass. The overwhelming majority of those new laws, however, are simply enslavement or theft, "under color of law." It becomes obvious from any objective look at how far we've regressed under this big brother and nanny government philosophy, that time is not on our side. Our subjugation is directly proportional to the number of new laws enacted "for our benefit." The litmus test of a successful legislative session ought therefore to be, not "how many new laws can we make", but "how many old laws can we remove, and how many of those remaining can we sunset?" Of course, an important corollary of that limited law approach, will direct you dutiful legislators to the first axiom of good government: vote "no" 100% of the time and you'll be positively right 99% of the time. Barring that happy outcome, I will here renew my perennial offer, in which I believe I am enthusiastically joined by millions of taxpayers, to double or triple your salaries if you'll just go home, and stay home. |
